What is a Scrum Master?

The scrum master is the team's servant-leader and process guardian: coaching Scrum practice, removing impediments, protecting the team from interruptions, and helping the wider organization understand how to work with the team. Authority over the process, none over the people — no task assigning, no status chasing.

Exam cue: when the scenario asks what a scrum master should do, look for facilitating, coaching, or impediment-removal answers — never command-and-control ones.

Worked example

The team's builds have waited three days for another department's security scans. The scrum master doesn't log it and hope: she negotiates a dedicated scan window with the security lead, and next sprint the wait is two hours. Meanwhile she's coached the product owner to stop assigning tasks mid-sprint — both actions exactly the job, neither of them "managing" anyone.
