What is Benefits Realization?
Benefits realization is the discipline of ensuring a project or program actually produces the business value that justified it — not just delivering outputs, but tracking the promised outcomes into operations, often long after the project closes.
It's the center of gravity of the PgMP exam: programs exist to deliver benefits, and the benefits management plan is the authoritative scorecard. At the project level, it's the difference between "we shipped it" and "it worked."
Worked example
The project delivered the new CRM on time — output achieved. Benefits realization asks the harder question six months later: did sales cycle time actually drop 20% as the business case promised? If nobody is measuring, nobody knows.
