What is AI-Augmented Project Management (PMP 2026)?

The 2026 PMP expects working literacy in AI as a PM tool: predictive analytics (schedule/cost risk forecasts from historical data), generative AI (drafting plans, registers, communications — always human-reviewed), automation (status collection, meeting summaries, anomaly alerts), and decision support (scenario modeling, resource optimization).

The tested judgment, not the tooling: AI outputs are inputs to human decisions; accountability never transfers; data confidentiality and bias are the PM's to govern; and the time AI frees moves the PM up the value chain — more stakeholder leadership, less status typing.

Worked example

A PM's Monday: the AI assistant has drafted the weekly report from tool data, flagged that the testing workstream's velocity trend puts the release date at risk (82% confidence), and summarized 40 open items into five needing decisions. She verifies the testing flag against reality (true — two testers were borrowed away), corrects one hallucinated milestone in the draft, and spends the reclaimed three hours negotiating the testers back. The machine reported; the human managed.
