Monitoring

What is Work Performance Data, Information & Reports?

PMI's refinement chain: data are raw observations (12 defects, 47% complete, $89K spent); information is data analyzed in context (defect rate is double last month's — the trend is adverse); reports package information for decisions (the dashboard recommending a quality audit).

Data comes from executing; information from the controlling processes; reports go to stakeholders. Exam trick: raw numbers alone are never "information" — analysis is what promotes them.

Worked example

Site logs record 210 cubic meters poured this week (data). The controls engineer compares it to plan: 15% behind, third consecutive slipping week, driven by pump downtime (information). The monthly report shows the trend line and recommends a standby pump at $8K/week versus a $250K delay claim (report). Same numbers, three altitudes.
