What is PESTLE Analysis?

PESTLE scans the macro environment across six lenses: Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, Environmental — surfacing external forces (EEFs, in PMBOK language) that shape or threaten the project. It pairs naturally with SWOT: PESTLE feeds the external half (opportunities and threats) with structure instead of vibes.

Best run at initiation and revisited at gates on long projects — the macro environment moves, and a three-year project ends in a different world than it started.

Worked example

A battery-plant feasibility runs PESTLE: Political — subsidies favorable but election pending; Economic — lithium volatile; Social — local support strong, skilled labor thin; Technological — cell chemistry shifting; Legal — permitting reform stalled; Environmental — water usage caps. Three of six lenses generate register entries with triggers, and the election date becomes a formal decision point in the roadmap. The scan took one workshop; the blind spots it closed had eight zeros.
