Organization

What is a Matrix Organization?

A matrix blends functional and projectized structures: people keep a functional home (and boss) while also answering to project managers. In a weak matrix the functional manager dominates; in a strong matrix the PM does; balanced sits between — and every employee has two bosses.

That dual reporting is the matrix's cost: resource negotiations and divided loyalties are the daily texture. Exam scenarios about "conflicting direction from two managers" are matrix scenarios.

Worked example

A developer in a balanced-matrix software company spends 60% on a product launch (for the PM) and 40% on platform maintenance (for her engineering manager). Release week, both claim her Thursday. The PM and functional manager negotiate — as the structure requires them to, roughly weekly, forever. The trade: flexibility and shared expertise, paid for in coordination.
